Sermon of the year has all female finalists for first time

by Cara Bentley

Corinne Broughton, Rebecca Coatsworth, Lydia Lee and Esther Longe will preach in front of a live audience and the viewers of BBC's The One Show on Thursday 21st June.

The London School of Theology and Preach magazine are running the competition and require sermons to be no more than 1500 words and based on the theme 'Be Set Free'.

Preachers from 19 to 83 years old entered and for a third of entrants it was the first sermon they had ever written.

Rebecca Coatsworth, a writer for a Christian charity said: "I got the email telling me I was a finalist at the end of my lunch break at work. I saw the subject line and started freaking out; I absolutely could not believe it! There were tears - happy tears!

"Honestly I am both incredibly nervous and incredibly excited for this event. I feel 100 per cent inadequate and totally out of my comfort zone, which terrifies me, but if God can use my sermon to speak to just one person (even if that person is me!) it will be worth it."

Finalist Corinne Broughton, who is studying Theology in London, said: "I had entered the competition because I really believe God is growing the gift of speaking and writing in me, but I never considered that I would stand a chance of winning the competition. It really is an amazing opportunity to be published in the book. Also, for the competition to spark The One Show's interest shows God is clearly moving - I feel extremely blessed."

Lydia Lee works for her local church where she has been preaching for around five years.

She said: "I love to share the word of God, and whenever I get the opportunity to do so, it always fills me with great excitement.

"I'm excited and nervous in equal measures about being part of the final! But I'm trusting in the Holy Spirit and stepping out in faith and obedience as I share my story, trusting that God will use it to encourage and challenge those who hear it."

The finalist with the most experience is Esther Longe from Durham, who is a Deacon in the Methodist Church and has been preaching for nearly 20 years.

Explaining what she liked about speaking, she said: "Preaching stories about the love and grace of God is always a privilege for me. Now having reached the final of Sermon of the Year I feel excited to share the gospel with others in this unique way.

"God has given me a passion for the characters and stories in His word, and my hope is for others to come to God with the same vulnerability and accept his unconditional love."

The final will be hosted by Principal of LST, Calvin Samuel and Amelia Gosal, Chief Executive of LWPT (the publishers of Preach magazine). The winning sermon will be announced at the finals after a reception at LST's campus in Northwood.

The winner will receive a year's free tuition at London School of Theology or a £500 voucher for the LST bookshop.

They are also able to gift their year's free tuition to another UK resident if they wish. The top 10 sermons will be published in a book.

Samuel said: "I look forward to hearing the gifted finalists preach their sermons and to welcome the winner to attend LST, one of the world's leading centres of theological study and training within a global city.

"The competition is always an exciting event for LST and Preach magazine and it is wonderful to see the relevance and celebration of preaching in our society today."

Louisa Lockwood, Editor of Preach, said: "We have been delighted to see the competition go from strength to strength each year but particularly this year with Sermon of the Year 2018. As a team we are inspired by the consistently high standard and style of the entrants. It encourages us and has shown us that preaching is alive and well and still one of the most powerful agents of transformation in the church."
