Sian Berry: Having strong faith groups is what makes London great

Ms Berry, the Green Party candidate for this year's London Mayoral election, says the work of faith groups in the capital is what makes London great.

She's been speaking exclusively to Premier as she bids to improve on her previous attempt to make it into City Hall.

Age 41
Camden Borough Councillor
Ran for Mayor in 2008
Previously worked for the Campaign for Better Transport

The 41-year-old, ran for mayor in 2008 coming fourth behind Boris Johnson, Ken Livingstone and Brian Paddick.

Her campaign this year is based around 'Green policies for London: the power of good ideas', but includes plans to

- Halt council estate demolitions
- Set up a London Renters Union open to all 2.3m private renters in the capital
- Set up a Community Homes Unit in City Hall to provide expert help for communities to design and plan their own regenerations
- Pressure the government to introduce some form of rent control
- Cut fares for outer London, with fewer zones from next year and moving to flat fares by 2025
- Introduce a one-hour 'ONE Ticket' covering all types of public transport so people no longer have to pay more than one fare for a single journey
- Justice for part-timers with a lower rate for daily pay-as-you-go caps to match the savings made by people with monthly travelcards
- Close City Airport and redevelop it for housing and innovative industry to remove noise and pollution blight for surrounding communities and make the site much more economically productive
- Provide cheaper, greener energy from a not-for-profit London energy company

Ms Berry has told Premier about the need for the Mayor to working closely with faith groups across the capital.

She said: "The multi-cultural nature of London, the fact we're the most diverse city in the UK, that we have such strong groups from different groups is part of our strengths - it's what makes London great.

"It's important that the mayor does engage with the faith groups that we have, helps them to work with each other but also just appreciates the work they do on the ground as volunteers."

While many have suggested the election is a two horse race, Ms Berry claims she has a really opportunity to break through.

"People are very bored of this two horse race and throughout politics throughout the world people are looking for alternatives. We are a very credible alternative in London...and we're ready to take over now."
