Sir Cliff Richard and South Yorkshire Police settle legal fight over home raid

Coverage of the search, which was broadcast live by the BBC in August 2014, led to Sir Cliff being named as a suspected sex offender.

The 76 year old Christian entertainer always insisted upon his innocence and, in June 2016, prosecutors announced that he would face no charges.

Claiming his right to respect for his private life had been infringed by the coverage, Sir Cliff sued South Yorkshire Police and the BBC, saying he wanted "very substantial" damages.

Lawyers told High Court judge Mr Justice Mann during a hearing on Friday that Sir Cliff Richard and force bosses had settled their legal battle.

South Yorkshire Police previously apologised "'wholeheartedly for the additional anxiety caused'' by its ''initial handling of the media interest'' surrounding its investigation into Sir Cliff.

The entertainer remains in a legal dispute with the BBC. Editors at the corporation have said they will "defend ourselves vigorously" against the action.
