Stormzy 'giving God the glory' as he receives Mercury Prize nod

by Tola Mbakwe

Grime artist Stormzy, whose debut album Gangs Signs And Prayer has been included, wrote on Twitter: "I put my heart, my soul and my absolute everything into making this album.

"Over the moon right now. Giving God the glory."

The UK artist's debut album Gangs Signs & Prayer (GSAP) reached number one in the charts earlier this year. The album has two openly Christians songs, 'Blinded By Your Grace', part 1 and 2.

Sarah Jones, Croydon Central's parliamentary representative, recently used some of Stormzy's lyrics during her first speech in the Commons after being elected in the artist's hometown.

Speaking about the number of young people her party was able to attract -including first-time voters - during the general election, Jones told MPs that the importance of not failing those that had "put their faith" in them and voted for them.

She explained: "If the election has taught us anything, it's that we cannot take anyone for granted.

"As Croydon's Stormzy put so well in one of his songs 'You're never too big for the boot' ".

Stormzy is up against Ed Sheeran, Dinosaur and Loyle Carner for the award.
