Stress of leading Catholic school leads to headmaster's drowning

by Tola Mbakwe

After a year in the position, 49 year old Adrian Wyles resigned from The Oratory School in South Oxfordshire because the role "just didn't suit him".

The inquiry found that Wyles came home in wet clothes days before his death and told his wife he went for a swim.

Wyles' wife reported her husband missing on 15 May 2017 when she noticed the piano he had been playing that night fell silent.

Tony Beldam, the corner's officer told Brighton Coroner's Court: "He left the house leaving no note.

"He was found fully clothed in the water by Dover Coastguard the next day."

A senior coroner for Brighton and Hove also told the court that Wyles' wife, Dee, said that her husband began suffering from depression after taking the role of headmaster at the Catholic school.

She said: "He didn't get any better in spite of some assistance and I think he spent a short amount of time in hospital and that seems to have helped. "

Coroner Hamilton-Deeley concluded that Wyles "walked for hours on end" and carried out a "deliberate act".

However she said: "I'd be very hard put to say he'd intended to drown himself."
