Christian woman wears Muslim head scarf for Lent

by Antony Bushfield

Jessey Eagan from Illinois decided to wear the hijab for Lent the day before Ash Wednesday.

"I'm reminding myself what it feels like to be an outsider so that I can remember to love people better no matter what they look like," she told Premier.

"What I'm doing for Lent specifically is that I'm putting on the practice of hospitality by doing this," she added.

The Genesis Director at Imago Dei Church said she's even been giving out communion whilst wearing the hijab.

The mother of two has been blogging about it and said: "My friend Neelam asked about reactions that I've gotten, and I responded by saying that mostly it's been positive, with a few exceptions of course.

"One of these exceptions being a Christian, who very harshly criticised what I am doing.

"This person was astonished that I would wear the hijab, as it is, to him, a symbol of 1400 years of oppression of Muslim women.

"Instead of seeking to understand my purpose in wearing the hijab for Lent, which is to learn new ways to show hospitality to neighbours, strangers, and enemies, all this person saw was me supporting the ideology of Islam.

"This person even said I was supporting ISIS by wearing the hijab. Completely ridiculous."

She told Premier there had been some internet abuse but most face to face reactions had been good.

"In general my community is very accepting. I really have not felt that much different in public. Aside from the stares I've had very positive feedback.

"My church is fully supportive. The first day I was wearing it, I had a meeting with the head pastor and I told him why I was wearing it.

"He got really excited."

Speaking about her first full day outside wearing the hijab she said: "I have to say, it's nice this time of year to be wearing a head covering, there's no need for a scarf".
