Christians refuse to bake same-sex wedding cake in Texas

by Hannah Tooley

Ben Valencia and fiancé Luis Marmolejo went to Kern's Bakery in Longview to get a quote for a cake for their wedding.

It has been claimed that the stores co-owner, Edie Delorme, refused to sell them a wedding cake, according to Longview News-Journal.

Speaking to the paper, Ben Valencia said: "It just kind of makes you feel dehumanized.

"People shouldn't have to worry about going into a business, especially a public business that serves the public, and have to worry about being turned away for something, for who you are."

Edie Delorme defended her decision, saying that gay and lesbian weddings clashed with her belief that marriage is between a man and a woman.

She said: "We just felt that was not an event that we needed to participate in."

Ben Valencia and Luis Marmolejo plan to marry on March 27th and had received a quote when Edie DeLorme asked the couple who the cake was for.

The couple say they were then shocked when the Texas co-owner said they could not have a cake made.

They said the baker owner replied in an allegedly 'disgusted' tone, saying: "Sorry. We don't provide cakes for homosexual marriages."

Edie DeLorme, who owns the bakery with her husband David, said the firm does refuse cake orders if they felt they did not fit their values.

She says they have previously turned down an order for a beer themed creation and risque cakes.

However, Mr Valencia said this refusal amounts to discrimination: "I wasn't really mad.

"I was more like saddened by it, because that is the first time anything like that has happened to me."

At present in Texas, discussions are underway to look into a new law allowing preachers to refuse to officiate at gay weddings.

Mr Valencia and Mr Marmolejo are having a cake made after another baker got in touch after seeing their story.
