Christians urged to pray for Russia

A priest at the Russian Orthodox Cathedral in London is calling for prayer for Russia as it comes to terms with the second bomb attack in consecutive days. This morning as 14 people died when an explosion occured on a bus in Volgograd. The blast came just a day after 17 were killed in a suicide attack at the city's train station yesterday morning. Many others have been injured. Investigators are linking both bombings and they're being treated as terrorist attacks.

No one has claimed responsibility for either incident.

Concern's now growing over whether there will be more violence in the run up to the Winter Olympics which take place in February. Russian expert Mary Dejevsky says any violence during the games could have a dramatic effect. She said: "Vladimir Putin has staked an enormous amount on the security and not just the safety but  the atmosphere of the Sochi Winter Olympics.

"If something goes wrong then it could potentially be destabilising."

Fr Joseph Skinner is a priest at the Russian Orthodox Cathedral in London.

He tells Premier there are fears we haven't seen the last of this spate of violence:

Later churches throughout Volgograd will hold special services to pray for those killed in the bombings and for the health of the survivors.

Metropolitan German of Volgograd said:

"For years our long-suffering land enjoyed a time of peace and calm.

"Now some forces are trying to seed panic among our people and instill fear in our souls.

"That will not happen."

Security has been tightened across Russia but in particular Volgograd. The regional governor has also announced there'll be five days of mourning for all the victims. The area has a history of violence with an attack on a bus taking in place in October. Many attacks in the North Caucasus have been linked to an Islamist insurgency operating nearby.
