Disney film omits Christian themes of the original book

by Cara Bentley

The story follows a girl searching for her father and, in the book, characters reference Isaiah 42:10-12, Romans 8:28-30 and 1 Corinthians 1:25-28.

Madeliene L'Engle's book 'A Wrinkle in Time' was not without controversy when it was released in 1962 and was one of the most banned books in America.

Although L'Engle was a Christian, the book was banned for equating Jesus with famous figures of history such as Da Vinci and Gandhi and accused of promoting witchcraft.

The film however, cuts Jesus out all together and has sparked disappointment on social media.

The screenwriter, Jennifer Lee, said in an interview with Uproxx that she decided to leave out the novel's explicit Christian themes: "one of the reasons it had that strong Christian element to it wasn't just because she [Madeliene L'Engle] was Christian, but because she was frustrated with things that needed to be said to her in the world and she wasn't finding a way to say it and she wanted to stay true to her faith."

Lee went on to say: "Her intention was looking at the ordinary real hero in an extraordinary situation. The power of love in this world, and we stayed very true to that".

Lee explained that the author's message was written through her worldview and "her lens through it was Christianity and everyone has a different lens in."

A Wrinkle in Time is out 23rd March and stars Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon.
