English missionaries to talk about deadly African hostage ordeal

David and Shirley Donovan from Fenland will talk at St Wendreda's Church in the nearby town of March on 13th October - exactly one year since they were captured in Nigeria.

A former GP, Mr Donovan told the Fenland Citizen newspaper: "We have a real sense of gratitude to all those people, who every evening gave up their time to pray for us.

"We really value the support of the people and we want to show our gratitude.

"The talk is a way of contextualising what happened to us, to explain what we were doing and why, what we have learned from the experience and to encourage Christians in the town in their faith."

The couple were offering free medical services to rural communities in Niger Delta state when they - along with two colleagues - were captured on 13th October 2017.

One person, 57 year old Ian Squire (pictured above) from Shepperton in Surrey, was killed.

The Donovans and their colleague Alanna Carson were freed 22 days after they were captured, following negotiations undertaken by Nigerian authorities.

Members of the public are invited to attend the talk at St Wendreda's Church in March. It starts at 7pm.

A Monthly Gift Of $11 Makes A World Of Difference

In a world of fake news there’s never been a greater need for quality Christian journalism. Premier’s mission is to provide the Church with the most up to date and relevant news, told from a Christian perspective. But we can’t do it without you.

Unlike many websites we haven't put up a paywall — we want to keep our journalism free at the point of need and as open as we can. Premier’s news output takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. No one in the USA is sharing news like we are across radio, magazines and online so please help us to continue that today.

For a monthly gift of $11 or more we’d also be able to send you a free copy of the brand new Premier Bible, a wonderful Anglicised version of the NLT packed with exclusive bonus content, reading plan and resources to help you get the most out of scripture.

Your monthly support will make a world of difference. Thank you.
