Evangelicals 'obstructed' from praying in city square called The Bible

The Evangelical Alliance of Nicaragua (AEN) fear authorities are refusing access to a square in the capital, Managua, over concerns it could spark unrest before the vote in November.

President of the AEN, Pastor Mauricio Fonseca Pereira told the La Prensa newspaper in Nicaragua: "We had envisioned and planned a prayer campaign, along with praise and worship for each Friday of the month through October, for the peace and elections in Nicaragua."

It is understood the plaza, called La Biblia (The Bible), was opened by President David Ortega in 2008 and designated as an area for religious services such as prayer meetings.

Pastor Fonseca Pereira went on to tell the paper the AEN had been in contact with municipal authorities in Managua but added: "I do not know what happened, and why they have denied us the plaza."

Rafael Cardona, Latin America Correspondent, from the Christian human rights organisation, International Christian Concern (ICC), said: "The intent of the AEN event appears to be peaceful. In fact, the group wants to pray for the well being and future of Nicaragua.

"It is deeply concerning to us that the AEN was denied the right to use the plaza, especially when the space was originally designated for religious purposes."

Speaking with the La Prensa newspaper, pastor Fonseca Pereira added: "Although we have been denied access to the plaza, the prayer vigils will take place in churches and temples.

"It will always be about the peace of the country and we will still do it throughout October, a month before the elections, in the hope that the electoral process will unfold in a peaceful way."

General elections will be held on November 6th in Nicaragua.
