Hillsong worship leader Marty Sampson says he loves Christian community despite backlash after doubts over faith

In a post on Instagram Sampson said: "My message to you is one of love. Love your enemies. Do good to those who persecute you. By this will all men know that you are my disciples, by the love you have for each other. No judgment. No condemnation. We are all humans, all cut from the same cloth."

Sampson went on to say that even though Christians "don't all agree on many different doctrines" they can still display love to one another.

He said: "Love covers a multitude of sins. Love keeps no record of wrongs. Love never fails."

A number of high profile Christians have spoken out against the artist for a (now deleted) post in which he renounced his faith in God online.

It comes a just a few weeks after Christian author Joshua Harris, author of 'I Kissed Dating Goodbye' announced he was no longer a Christian on social media.

In an interview with Fox News, CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Franklin Graham explained why he thought the two men had walked away from their faith: "They weren't real Christians. They were young. Their faith wasn't very strong. They might have been atheists. They hate God. And they just wanted publicity".

Sampson later clarified that he had not completely lost his faith but that his belief was on 'shaky ground'.

After being criticised for using his influential platform to steer people away from faith in God, Sampson responded with another post saying: "It was only when the Christian media and Christian celebrities started calling me out personally, putting the spotlight on me as a human being, that I thought 'well ok, I'm here now, and you are demanding I say something, I may as well say what I think.'"

He continued: "I care not what you think of me. Now I will speak my mind. Regardless of how much you dislike it, from my heart to yours: I love you."
