The women chosen to take part have been sent to convents in Madrid, Granada and Alicante and will spend six weeks doing the day to day duties of a nun.

Producer Mariano Blanco says it will give more information on the "rarely seen" lifestyle.

At the end of the series the women will be given the choice to remain in the convent or leave and continue their faith as a layperson.

The show has been commissioned amid growing numbers of nuns appearing on TV.

Popular BBC show Call the Midwife is currently in its fifth series and regularly attracts millions of viewers.

In 2014 Italian nun Sister Cristina Scuccia hit the headlines when she won the country's version of The Voice.
