Fr Tom Uzhannalil (pictured, wearing black) from the southern state of Kerala was welcomed on Wednesday to the office of Narendra Modi in Dehli. He also met the country's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj (pictured below, in orange) where he was presented with a bouquet of flowers.
The priest was captured by extremists in the Yemeni port city of Aden in March 2016 during an attack on a home for elderly. Four nuns were among 16 people killed in the incident.
It prompted an appeal by Pope Francis for the release of Fr Tom. A video issued in December 2016 showed the priest begging for his life and explaining that his health was deteriorating.
A special prayer service was held in March at Ernakulam Town Hall in Kerela this year to mark the one year anniversary of Fr Tom's kidnapping.
He was eventually released on 12th September, following dialogue between the governments of India and Yemen. Though he kidnappers did make demands, the Indian government insisted no ransom was paid to secure Fr Tom's release.
Fr Tom is due to return to his hometown of Ramapuram in Kottayam on Sunday, before meeting Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday.
