Iranian Christian asks followers not to pray for the persecution to stop

An Iranian Christian is calling for prayer for those facing persecution in his country but not to pray for the persecution to stop.

Firouz Kanjani of the Church of Iran says it's important to remember all those who are in prison for their faith.

One of them is Pastor Behnam Irani, who is currently held in Ghezal Hesar prison in Iran. He is said to be gravely ill and reports say he is being refused medical treatment.

He was arrested in December 2006, and sentenced to six years imprisonment on charges of "action against the state" and "action against the order."

Mr Kanjani tells Premier why he isn't asking for the persecution to end:

Anti-persecution charity Christian Solidarity Worldwide says there are regular raids on church gatherings, harsh interrogations and physical and psychological torture.

Its Chief Executive Mervyn Thomas tells Premier it's not the first time he's heard a request like this from Christians facing persecution.

And you can hear more from Firouz Kanjani on Voice for the Voiceless on Saturday at 11.30am.
