Male focus in global gender violence campaign

The campaign hopes to raise awareness about gender-based violence as a human rights issue at the local, national, regional and international level.

Since it began in 1991, 3700 organisations in 164 countries have participated, including Christian based charity, Restored, which will be having a specific blog each day of the 2011 campaign.

Peter Grant co-director of Restored said: "We're asking all men over these next 16 days to respect women, to challenge other men in terms of our attitudes and behaviour. Think about the language we use; the things we look at and so on ...and to sign up to the White Ribbon Pledge, which is never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women."

In the House of Commons, on Wednesday, Green MP, Caroline Lucas also called on the Government to develop the UK-wide strategy to end violence against women and girls.

Ms Lucas also called for the recording and publishing of gender-specific violent crime data to be made a requirement for police, health and social services - the lack of which she said: "seriously obscures the extent to which women and girls are subjected to gendered violence".
