Missionary speaks of gospel opportunity following Thailand caves emergency

The twelve boys and their football coach were found alive yesterday - ten days after they went missing.

They'd been exploring caves in Chiang Rai when they became trapped.

Video released by the Thai navy showed the boys in their football uniforms sitting on a dry area inside the cave above the water as a spotlight, apparently from a rescuer, illuminated their faces.

Chiang Rai provincial governor Narongsak Osatanakorn said the health of the boys and coach were checked using a field assessment in which red is critical condition, yellow is serious and green is stable.

"We found that most of the boys are in green condition," he said. "Maybe some of the boys have injuries or light injuries and would be categorised as yellow condition. But no one is in red condition."

Missionary Ewan McGregor is based in Chiang Rai and has been offering support to the families.

Speaking on Premier's News Hour he told of the joy of seeing the parents receive good news.

"It went from no hope to really hopeful and everyone is excited to see their children again," he said. "To see the smiles of the parents' faces was a powerful thing."

McGregor is calling on Christians to pray for those exploring faith in the aftermath of this emergency.

He said: "It's been a very spiritual nine or ten days with so many Christian families praying and the Buddhist families doing their prayers so it's a great time to share the gospel with the Thai people.

"But we just pray for a safe rescue of the kids coming out of the cave.

"This final 'how to get them out' is what we need to pray for."
