Pope meets freed death row Sudanese Christian

Pope Francis has met with the Sudanese Christian woman sentenced to die for apostasy.

Meriam Ibrahim and her family flew to Rome this morning after all charges against her were dropped.

During the meeting the Pontiff played with her children and thanked her for witnessing to the faith.

According to Khataza Gondwe from Christian Solidarity Worldwide the Vatican was probably involved in negotiations to release her, on Premier's 'News Hour', she said: "the Vatican's very very interested in her case and probably had a lot to do with some of the behind the scenes negotiations, at least encouraging the foreign ministry and the prime minister to speak up on her behalf quite regularly"

The 27 year old was taken with Italy's Foreign Minister Lapo Pistelli on a private jet at 4am on Thursday morning.

The minister posted a picture of him with the woman and said "mission accomplished".

Italian TV showed the plane land in Rome and it's reported Meriam will have an audience with Pope Francis before she leaves for the United States.

The mother of two was jailed and sentenced to death in May for abandoning her Muslim faith, although she had never been a Muslim and was raised Christian by her mother when her father left the family.

She was forced to give birth to her daughter whilst in prison with her legs in shackles.

After being released on 23 June when an appeal court overturned her sentence she was rearrested just days later as she tried to leave Sudan.

Authorities accused her of using false documents.

She was later released to the US embassy where she had been staying with her two children and husband.

All charges against her have now been dropped and Premier understands she is in good health.
