Priest urges Italy and Romania to act over Sicily migrant exploitation

by Aaron James

According to The Observer, Fr Beniamino Sacco made the call after the Romanian government formally agreed to work with Italian authorities to stop abuses happening in Ragusa (above, at night), on the island of Sicily.

Delegates from Romania met politicians and locals in Ragusa on Friday.

It's believed more than half of the 5000 Romanian in seasonal farm work in Ragusa have been sexually exploited by their employers. It's also thought they are almost all exploited in terms of their wages and working conditions.

Fr Beniamino, who serves in Ragusa and was at Friday's meeting between politicians, has said women have come to him in confidence for help and that they're reluctant to go to the police for fear of losing their work.

While neither the Romanian nor Italian governments have been able to pinpoint an exact number of women who've been exploited in Ragusa, they both acknowledge that it's happening to some degree and condemn it.

The priest told the paper: "They always hold a meeting right after a story comes out, and the next day they pretend nothing has happened. I call the Romanian women here the invisible women.

"For years, we have been denouncing these abuses and too little has been done. We can only estimate the full scope, and I can tell you it is a huge phenomenon. And this is only the tip of an iceberg.

"I hope both the authorities, the Italian and the Romanian ones, are going to do something."
