US quashes reports stating Pastor Andrew Brunson is set to be released

by Eno Adeogun

An embassy official told Reuters on Monday that there was no update on whether pressure from the US for the pastor to be released had worked.

Turkey is in a diplomatic dispute with the US over its continued detention of the evangelical pastor, who is originally from Black Mountain, North Carolina.

He was arrested in 2016 while he was working as a missionary there and accused of partaking in terrorist organisations.

He was recently released to home detention and faces a prison sentence of up to 35 years if he is convicted at the end of his ongoing trial.

The Turkish lira tumbled another 7 per cent on Monday as the central bank's measures to free up cash for banks failed to restore investor confidence.

The US imposed sanctions on two Turkish officials over Mr Brunson's detention earlier this month.
