We need to debate LGBT rights, says top Trinidad Presbyterian church leader

by Hannah Tooley

Rt Revd Annabell Lalla-Ramkelawan, the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Trinidad and Tobago, is calling on lawmakers to hold a serious debate about the rights of homosexual people in the country.

Her action has been sparked by a homophobic comment directed towards an opposition MP from the country's Sports Minister.

Rt Revd Annabell Lalla-Ramkelawan says that the time has come to talk about the right of sexual minorities in the country, according to Gay Star News.

The Sports Minister, Darryl Smith, is reported to have called Barry Padarath a "princess", appearing to imply he was gay and playing on the name of his constituency, Princes Town, during a debate on the national budget.

Rt Revd Annabell Lalla-Ramkelawan has called the comment "unethical" and "uncalled for" during an interview with Trinidad and Tobago Newsday.

She said that: "I think that the State must give everybody due respect.

"I think the time has come where the State needs to spend some time in discussing the rights of individuals and particularly those of other sexual persuasions.

"They should be given their rights."

The Moderator added that it was important this debate would be held in the context of the culture and traditions of the Caribbean island.

"Coming from the background that we came from, I don't think the society itself is ready for people to come out of the closet but as the State, you need to ensure that people have their rights in spite of their sexuality.

"My Church has not taken a position on this.

"It is something, like the State, we have to begin discussions on.

"Other Churches have taken a stance but we are yet to take a stance."

However she also said that the nation often followed trends from the USA and this would soon lead to pressure from the north.

"We cannot any longer be like the ostrich, hide our heads and think it will go away.

"It is not going to go away. It is something that will come because we take pattern from North America.

"If you live in North America, you would see on forms they would have the other listing, not only male and female."

As it stands homosexuality is illegal in Trinidad and Tobago though the law is rarely enforced today.
