Sylvia’s story

Sylvia is a 34-year-old single mother from a tiny rural village in Malawi. She struggles to provide food for her four children. ‘It’s just a matter of surviving,’ she says. Malawi is in the grip of a food crisis where one in five families don’t have enough food to eat. Hunger lurks at every door.

Sylvia is desperate to provide for her children, but she doesn’t know how. In the last harvest she ended up with less than half of what she would normally have. She now has only one bag of maize left to last her six months. Even if her family has just one meal a day that will only them last six weeks.

The situation is dire, but you can make a difference. Together we can release families like Sylvia’s from the chains of hunger – for good.

Meeting Sylvia

When I last visited Malawi I didn’t have any children. Now I have two. It was hard enough to leave them behind for a week. But harder still to meet children just like them suffering because they don’t have enough food.

When I ask her what she does when there is no food for her children to eat, her answer is painful to hear: ‘I cook leaves for my children. I have nothing else to give them.’

Families like Sylvia’s desperately need compassionate Christians like you and me to help provide long term solutions to hunger. There is an answer – an innovative farming method taught through churches that can multiply harvests ten times. Even in the midst of drought, local churches are giving families like Sylvia’s the gift of abundance.

£5 a month could give six families a year farming training to grow more than enough food. It will be a lifeline to families like Sylvia’s.

Who is Tearfund?

Formed in the late 1960s, Tearfund evolved from the Evangelical Alliance out of a determination to marry Christian compassion with practical action. Today, Tearfund remains driven by God’s relentless love, answering his call to bring material help and spiritual hope among those who need it most.

Inspired by the unending compassion of Jesus, we are determined to bring life in all its fullness to people facing the most extreme poverty. We’re Christians committed to following Jesus where the need is greatest.

God has called us to serve those living in poverty, regardless of race, gender, nationality or religious belief. We know the gospel has the power to transform lives and heal communities, we see this truth in our work every day. God isn’t giving up on the poor, and neither are we. We won’t stop until poverty stops.

If we can look with our eyes, but see with our hearts; if we can find the courage to stay on his side of the road by walking alongside those who need help the most; if we can learn to live compassionately and love in many wonderful and unexpected ways; then maybe, just maybe, we can start to...

Give like Jesus.
